I determinanti della salute: socioeconomici, stili di vita, ambiente (20 hours / 5 ECTS credits)

The course aims to provide tools to define and measure the main health determinants that are not directly linked to the healthcare sector, as well as to provide methodological tools to assess their influence on public and global health, in line with the World Health Organization's Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
In particular, the course will analyze the social determinants that include the socio-economic and cultural conditions in which individuals are born, grow up, work, and age, as well as lifestyles, individual or community factors deemed sustainable by the WHO to maintain health and prevent disease. These include proper nutrition, physical activity, the reduction of behaviors harmful to health (e.g., smoking and excessive alcohol consumption), stress and sleep management, and adequate knowledge of occupational risks.
The relationship between individuals and environmental factors that may directly or indirectly affect health will also be analyzed, including the spread of pathogens and other biological factors affecting susceptible populations, or chemical and physical contaminants.
Topics: What are the main indicators for evaluating the effect of social, environmental, occupational, and lifestyle determinants on health; design and methods of epidemiological surveillance systems; Disease Burden approach; main models of of integration of disease determinants existing in literature.
